Background of the Study
Taxpayer education is a crucial component of effective tax administration, as it helps taxpayers understand their obligations and the benefits of compliance. In Nigeria, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has implemented various taxpayer education programs aimed at enhancing awareness and increasing voluntary compliance. These outreach initiatives in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, are designed to reach diverse taxpayer groups, including individuals, businesses, and organizations (Ogunleye & Oduwole, 2023).
Abuja, as a political and economic hub, has a large concentration of formal and informal sector workers. However, despite these efforts, tax compliance rates in Abuja remain below expectations, with many taxpayers still unaware of their rights and responsibilities (Olawoyin & Adeyemi, 2024). The effectiveness of these taxpayer education programs in fostering compliance has been a subject of debate, with concerns about the scope, reach, and content of the programs.
This study examines the impact of the FIRS outreach initiatives in Abuja on taxpayer compliance, evaluating the effectiveness of these programs in improving tax knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.
Statement of the Problem
The FIRS has invested in taxpayer education programs as a means to improve tax compliance across Nigeria. However, these outreach initiatives have faced challenges in reaching all target groups effectively, particularly in urban areas like Abuja. While there is evidence of increased awareness, there is limited empirical research on how these programs directly influence compliance behavior (Adedayo & Salami, 2024).
This study investigates the relationship between taxpayer education programs and compliance in Abuja, highlighting the successes and challenges of the FIRS initiatives.
